It was an honor to attend the India Culture Center’s celebration of India’s 80th Independence Day on Sunday, August 23, at the Stafford Centre. This year’s theme “Two Nations, Two Milestones, One Celebration” also recognized the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The tremendous attendance reflected the strength and vitality of Fort Bend County’s Indian American community. The Stafford Centre was filled with
families, community leaders and guests enjoying colorful cultural performances, traditional attire, music, exhibits and an atmosphere of genuine pride and fellowship.
Seeing the flags of India and the United States displayed together was especially meaningful. Although our two nations have distinct histories and traditions, both cherish the enduring principles of freedom, opportunity, hard work and self-government. Generations of Indian Americans have enriched our nation while preserving the culture, faith and family traditions that make their heritage so special.
Fort Bend County is one of the most diverse counties in America, and events like this demonstrate that our diversity is strongest when it brings us together. Our neighbors may trace their roots to countries throughout the world, but we share a common commitment to building safe communities, supporting our families and creating greater opportunities for the next generation.
I was also pleased to see the Fort Bend County Republican Party engaging with attendees and participating in this important community celebration. Civic involvement begins with conversations, relationships and ensuring that every resident knows their voice matters.
My sincere appreciation goes to the India Culture Center’s board, partnering organizations, event leadership, sponsors, performers and many volunteers who made this extraordinary celebration possible. Their dedication created an event that honored India’s journey to independence while also celebrating the friendship between India and the United States.
Congratulations to India and the Indian American community on this historic 80th Independence Day. May the friendship between our nations—and among neighbors throughout Fort Bend County—continue to grow for generations to come.
