On Saturday evening, August 8, I had the pleasure of attending the Needville AG Foundation’s first annual Rural Roots Gala at the Columbus Club Hall in Needville.
The packed hall was a wonderful reflection of the Needville community—families, farmers and ranchers, educators, business owners, public officials, and community leaders gathered together in support of agricultural education and the young people of Needville FFA.
Agriculture has played an essential role in shaping Needville and Fort Bend County for generations. It is more than an industry; it is part of our heritage, our economy, and our way of life. The historic photographs displayed in the gala program served as a meaningful reminder of the generations of farmers, merchants, FFA members, and families who helped build the community we know today.
The Needville AG Foundation was established to advocate for and strengthen the opportunities provided through Needville FFA. Serving much like a booster organization, the Foundation helps meet the growing needs of the FFA program and its students as school funding and educational demands continue to change.
Funds raised by the Foundation will support student activities, scholarships, competitions, conferences, leadership development, and other educational opportunities. The organization also encourages volunteerism, connects local businesses with agricultural education, and helps students develop the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed.
FFA prepares young people for much more than careers in agriculture. Through hands-on learning, competition, public speaking, teamwork, and community service, students develop responsibility, confidence, leadership, and a strong work ethic. Those qualities will serve them well regardless of the career path they ultimately choose.
The Rural Roots Gala included dinner, entertainment, raffle drawings, and a spirited fundraising auction. The impressive selection of donated items—from homemade Needville favorites and handcrafted pieces to fishing excursions, sporting experiences, and vacation getaways—demonstrated the generosity of the community and its commitment to these students.
As County Treasurer, I often speak about stewardship—the responsibility to wisely manage and strengthen what has been entrusted to us. That same principle was evident throughout the evening. By supporting agricultural education today, the Needville AG Foundation is helping preserve an important part of our heritage while preparing a new generation to lead tomorrow.
The success of this inaugural gala was a testament to what can be accomplished when a community comes together around its young people. It was especially encouraging to see so many individuals and organizations willing to contribute their time, talents, and resources to help Needville FFA students learn, compete, and shine on some of the biggest stages.

Fort Bend County is stronger when we honor our agricultural heritage, support those who work the land, and invest in the next generation. I was proud to join the Needville community for an evening that celebrated all three.
Our rural roots run deep—and with this kind of community support, the future of agriculture in Needville is bright.
