It was a pleasure to attend The Bend Back to School Fest on Sunday evening at Mission Bend Community Park. The event brought together volunteers, community organizations, businesses, public servants, and generous sponsors with one shared mission: helping local children begin the new school year prepared and confident.
Families were able to receive free backpacks, school supplies, hygiene products, and other much-needed resources. These items may seem simple, but for a student walking into the classroom, having the right supplies can provide a meaningful sense of confidence, belonging, and readiness to learn. For parents facing rising household expenses, this assistance can also offer welcome relief.
What impressed me most, however, was the remarkable tenacity demonstrated when the weather took a turn.
As thunder rolled and rain swept across the park, the organizers, volunteers, vendors, and community partners remained focused on the families they had come to serve. Holding an event outdoors is challenging under the best circumstances, but carrying out that mission during a thunderstorm requires an extraordinary level of dedication, flexibility, and perseverance.
They worked to protect the supplies, adapt to the changing conditions, and continue helping those who had come seeking assistance. Their determination sent a powerful message: the mission mattered, the families mattered, and they were not going to allow difficult circumstances to erase the good work that had brought everyone together.
Tenacity is not the absence of hardship. It is the decision to keep moving forward when circumstances become difficult. That spirit was clearly visible throughout the evening.
As Fort Bend County Treasurer, I often speak about stewardship and responsibility in managing public resources. Events like this remind us that stewardship also includes how we care for our neighbors, invest in our children, and use our time, talents, and resources to strengthen the entire community.

Your willingness to serve—outdoors and through the storm—demonstrated the very best of Fort Bend County.
The rain may have changed the evening’s conditions, but it never washed away the purpose behind the event. Thank you to everyone who remained committed to ensuring that local children and families knew their community was standing with them as they prepared for a successful new school year.
